SUPPORTING SURVIVORS IN MATERNITY CARE
Trauma-informed maternity training for professionals who want to get this right.
Most maternity professionals will care for survivors of sexual trauma without knowing it. SAFER Birth Training equips you to recognise what is really happening and respond in ways that protect safety, dignity, and trust.
Why This Matters
01
An estimated one in four women in England and Wales has experienced sexual assault. Many will never disclose. But their bodies remember.
02
Pregnancy, labour, and birth can trigger trauma responses that are often misread as non-compliance, anxiety, or difficult behaviour. Without the right training, even well-intentioned care can cause harm.
03
SAFER Birth Training gives maternity professionals the knowledge, language, and clinical tools to provide care that is genuinely safe. Not just clinically, but emotionally.

S
See the Survivor
Shift your lens. Assume trauma may be present, whether disclosed or not.
A
Ask and Affirm Consent
Consent is ongoing, not one moment. Explain. Ask. Check in continuously.
F
Foster Safety
Reduce exposure. Protect privacy. Create predictability. Safety is emotional, not just clinical.
E
Empower Control
Offer real choices. Involve her in decisions. Restore what trauma took away.
R
Respond, Don't React
Understand behaviour through a trauma lens. Pause. Regulate. Adapt your approach.
“Trauma-informed care is not extra work. It is better work.”

Michaela Kalusova
Founder & Lead Trainer
14 years supporting women through pregnancy, labour, and postpartum. Masters in Psychology. Trained with Dr Michel Odent. Pre- and perinatal psychology with APPPAH. Practitioner training with Penny Simkin and Phyllis Klaus.
SAFER Birth grew from a pattern she kept seeing: women who had prepared thoroughly for birth, whose labour was progressing normally, but who had gone somewhere else. Their bodies were responding to something the preparation could not reach.
Michaela’s expertise bridges the clinical and psychological, providing maternity professionals with the language and tools to recognise trauma responses that are often misread. Her mission is to ensure every survivor receives care that is fundamentally safe—emotionally as well as clinically.
